If you have HIV or AIDS, follow some simple nutritional tips below.
- Limit the intake of processed foods. However, it is best to eliminate all processed foods from your diet.
- Eat more fresh foods. Meals should contain plenty of vegetables and fruits. You should especially eat vegetables and fruits rich in antioxidants, as these nutrients support the body's defense against bacteria.
Include carrots, pumpkins, and various berries in your diet.
- Include protein-rich foods in your diet. You can add fish, lean meats, nuts, dairy products, and lentils. Add cottage cheese, boiled eggs, or nuts to salads; eat oatmeal with yogurt. Always eat freshly prepared meals with healthy ingredients and always add some protein.
- HIV can cause rapid weight loss. Therefore, consume more calories by consuming healthy carbohydrates and fats. Try to eat whole grains every day. Choose whole-wheat bread, crackers, pasta, and brown rice. Oatmeal and potatoes can also be eaten. Eat fruit (fresh and dried) and simple sugars in the form of jams, jellies, and maple syrup.
You can also eat nut butters, sour cream, and some butter and margarine in moderation.
- Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day. HIV reduces your appetite. So when you feel the urge to eat, take advantage of it.
- Avoid sugary drinks and alcohol.
- Drink plenty of water. Adequate fluid intake can prevent fatigue and reduce serious medication side effects. Increase your water intake if you have a fever or diarrhea, which are common symptoms of HIV.
- Eat salt and sugar in moderation.
- Do not take vitamin supplements without consulting your doctor.
- Discuss your diet with your doctor, as some foods may interfere with the effectiveness of medications. Follow your doctor's recommendations for diet.
Living with HIV/AIDS is not easy. However, a healthy diet can contribute greatly to your health.
